An interactive onboarding guide teaching Hub members the basics of AI and prompting, built as a standalone module before the personas project, in response to data showing over 60% of new users identified as complete beginners.

The Challenge

Over 60% of users coming into Hub identified themselves as beginners, with little to no prior experience of AI tools or prompting. Dropping straight into Challenges and courses risked losing this group before they got any real value from the platform. The brief was to teach the fundamentals in a way that felt approachable rather than technical, and hand users off into the wider platform once they were ready.

What We Did

I designed a 6-step interactive guide covering what AI tools are, what prompting means, and a repeatable formula for writing a good prompt: role, task, context and format. Rather than static explanation screens, the format section lets users build a real prompt live from selectable options, seeing it assembled in front of them rather than just reading about the theory. Beyond the guide content itself, I mapped the full flow around it: hooking the guide into the existing welcome modal so it's offered right when a new user signs up, giving users the option to skip straight to the 30 Day AI Challenge if they don't need it, and resurfacing the guide later through a 'Refresh Your Knowledge' prompt for anyone who wants to revisit it. I worked closely with the Head of Product, a copywriter and the Marketing Director to get the tone right for a genuine beginner audience, and built a working prototype using Claude Code and the design system I'd already built for Hub, to test the flow before handoff.

The Solution

New users are offered the guide directly on sign-up, with the option to skip straight to the 30 Day AI Challenge if they don't need it. On completion, users are guided onward automatically, into a Prompting-specific follow-up guide, then into the Challenge itself, so the beginner content acts as an on-ramp rather than a dead end. For anyone who's already been through it, 'Refresh Your Knowledge' makes the guide easy to find again later, rather than something users have to hunt for in the navigation.

Key Deliverables

  • 6-step interactive onboarding guide covering AI fundamentals and prompting
  • Live prompt-builder module (the 'Golden Formula': role, task, context, format)
  • Guided hand-off flow into the Prompting guide and 30 Day AI Challenge
  • Working prototype built in Claude Code using the existing Hub design system

Retrospective

Building the prompt formula as something users assemble themselves, rather than just explaining it, made the abstract idea of 'prompting' concrete in a way text alone couldn't. Working with a copywriter early also mattered more here than on other projects, tone was doing a lot of the work in making a genuinely nervous beginner audience feel capable rather than talked down to.

If I ran this again, I'd want to instrument the handoff into the 30 Day AI Challenge from the start, so we had real data on whether the guide was actually improving Challenge completion, rather than assuming it based on the strong beginner stat alone.
